The meaning of places.

The meaning of places, the feelings they awaken, their soul: all grow from the emotional depth we find in corners of the world, held within a particular time, a changing landscape, a story.

Two lives that take time to meet.

Giovannella was born in Naples and Giuseppe in Locorotondo, but it would take time for their lives to meet in the green countryside of the Itria Valley. By then, dreams and needs were asking for room to grow: when Giuseppe wondered where he might find himself again after a life as a globe-trotting engineer, the Itria Valley was the answer.

It was the irresistible pull of roots for a man who wanted to grow from a sapling into a tree and leave a lasting mark. And so the white building that caught Giuseppe’s eye on 3 May would become Masseria Battaglini. Giovannella, in turn, gradually grew attached to this land, where she felt welcomed, loved and safe, returning that feeling by rediscovering the best of herself to share.

Care is love that embraces.

Giovannella carries her father in the working life she once led, her mother in her joy of cooking, her grandmother in the way she tells stories and her daughters in the way she welcomes people. With Giuseppe she discovers that what comes most naturally is caring for others.

Care is a word full of meaning: thoughtfulness, concern, attention, respect, love. It is alive in practical things too, in the relationship between people and plants, animals and food, in the world they share. Care means being attentive to people, relationships and bonds. It also means finding a way to live with pain.

Our story does not end with us.

Our story of roots and land has not been an easy one. The path was winding, but we worked hard to make this corner of paradise our own and to make it feel that way for our guests. Ours is a place that tells of other places: where we were born and grew up, where we lived, the places we dreamed of and longed for, and even those we left behind.

Masseria Battaglini is a web of relationships, between us and those seeking shelter and a smile. Here, a slower life sets the rhythm of happiness, giving us time to nurture it and then share it. Love is like a small plant: it needs tending every day. We learned that together, and this is where we made it real.
